When Life Gets in the Way…

Wow! It is absolutely amazing how quickly time can fly when you’re in a caught up in the Summer haze. Looking back, I guess I could pin point when the madness started and that would be after I returned from Hawaii. Truly, that’s when I started getting sick. I thought I was on the fast track – my exciting new job in North Carolina, my boyfriend finally getting his release date and my health on the up swing! Think again…

I don’t think I will ever be able to forget that phone call. After having a MRI on my spine, my doctor informed my that my transverse myelitis had returned. This villain of a disease had taken so much from me before – my hair {thanks to treatment} and my ability to walk. After being admitted into the hospital with so many unanswered questions, all we could think to say was “at least they caught it early.” Comforting, right? Moments like this will make your fast track come to halt and you’re left feeling helpless, angry, and lost. I have always tried to be a positive person – the girl who views the world as her oyster, a believer in everything happening for a reason, always sipping from the glass half full – while finding hope in any obstacle.

Staying in tune with my insane medical history – transverse myelitis {TM} is a rare disease. Frankly, there isn’t much research out there and course of treatment is a fine line. Living this life is enough to make someone lose their self. Having your legs tingle with too much physical activity and the most recent side effect – my hands are tingling too. This feeling of not having any control of your body is mind numbing and indescribable. I would never wish this feeling or sickness upon my worse enemy.

My life is currently run my a treatment of prednisone and chemotherapy, in “hope” to reverse the damage done to my body. Just this week my hair has started falling out. I know that means I need to start looking to wigs to hide what TM has taken from me, but “at least they caught it early” {right?}. I returned to work pretty soon after getting discharged from the hospital and luckily, my life seems fairly normal from that outside. One thing that has been steady throughout this process is my faith and my family. Without these two things, I wouldn’t be able to put a smile on my face everyday and find hope in any situation when life gets in the way.

Kissing Hawaii Goodbye

After a three week hiatus due to a much anticipated trip to Hawaii – this blog post is long over due! Only getting to see your significant other will truly make you appreciate every moment and treasure the short time together. After three years, saying goodbye never gets any easier and I am counting down the days to Christmas! Since I am completely shameful that I haven’t been posting, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite moments from my Hawaiian adventure with y’all! I sincerely hope you enjoy those photos as much as I do!

Carolina Girl

Shame on me for ignoring my blog the past week! I promise that I have the best excuse – I’ve been packing, unpacking and starting my new job with the Outer Banks Wedding Association! I couldn’t be happier to be an official Carolina Girl and start my new career adventure in a new city!

One of the most beautiful things about making such a drastic move, is the support I’ve received from my family, boyfriend and friends. It’s amazing how many people ask me about how this move has affected the relationship I have with my boyfriend. (The irony of course being that he is stationed thousands of miles away.) When you love someone and know that you were meant to be together, there will never be any doubt that you will. A support system like that is unlike any other and I couldn’t be more blessed to have such wonderful people in my life.

Cheers to the endless opportunities my future holds!

Move Over Awareness Month

At one point or another we’ve all felt our hearts jump in terror when flashing blue or red lights appear in the rearview mirror. While they may not be hailing you over to give you a speeding ticket or coming to your rescue after a little fender bender; anytime police officers, fireman, or EMS are blaring down the highway we must get out of their way! All too often, you’ll hear tragic news coverage of a tow truck worker or police officer getting killed because a driver did not take proper safety precautions by slowing down and moving over to another lane. Thankfully, the Virginia Senate made the month of June ‘Move Over Awareness Month,‘ and I couldn’t be happier about this resolution!

Even though moving over is a law in many states, it’s my sincere hope that all states adopt similar awareness programs for everyone to be educated on this simple precautions drivers can make to save a life. Take a moment to read Senate Resolution 102, by clicking here, to learn more about this cause and share it with everyone you know. Whether you are a Virginian or as far away as California, please learn more about this campaign and always slow down and move over when you see any vehicle on the side of the road.  Life is too precious to not make this easy maneuver!

Six Staples for Surviving a Summer Wedding

With June on our heels, wedding season kicking off and hot Southern weather rolling in there is a lot happening in the South. What isn’t to love about a summer wedding below the Mason-Dixon line? Well, there is one thing I believe we’d all agree on and that’s the thick, humid, scorching heat that takes over the outdoors come late spring. Since your weekends will be filled with wedding festivities I thought I’d share some tips and tricks to staying cool and comfortable during summer those hot summer nuptials. From spritzers to sunscreen, here are a few of my go-to suggestions for surviving a summer wedding!

Wear Sunscreen. But, seriously…wear sunscreen! Any part of your skin that will be exposed the blaring sun should be slathered in a coat of at least 15 SPF sunscreen. Whether you’re just outside for the cocktail hour or spending the entire afternoon celebrating outside, pack a small bottle in your clutch and reapply between cocktails.

Up-do Your Hair. While an up-do may not be your best look, trust me, you’ll thank me for this suggestion later. The last thing you want is to see the next day are  pictures of your hair looking a hot mess. Make a spa day of it and plan to have your hair done professionally before the big “I do’s.”

Hydrate. Without a doubt, water should be your best friend on the big day! There’s nothing wrong with indulging in the bride and groom’s signature cocktails, but to avoid dehydration and becoming “that girl” at your friend’s wedding be sure to toss back plenty of H2O.

Pack Your Shades. Making sure to wear your sunglasses should be a given, but I can’t even count the number of times I’ve left them at home! Save your beautiful eyes (and eye makeup) and please, please remember to bring your stylish shades. I always keep a backup pair in my car just in case too!

Spritzers. No, I am not referring to white wine spritzers! I’m talking about those precious petite Evian Facial Sprays. These gems are a true lifesavers and are one of my favorite go-tos for warm weather, from beach to wedding days.

Dress Appropriately. Normally I would say that beauty is pain, but when it comes to the humid air I raise the white flag! Keep it cool with a seersuckers sundress or your favorite lightweight Lilly dress; because there is nothing worse then wearing a tight dress or anything silk to a summer wedding!!

DIY Darling: Grow Your Own Succulents

It’s no secret that succulents are one of the hottest flora on the scene this season. Whether you’re a June bride and planning to host immense succulents in your bouquet or just want to jump on this trendy bandwagon, growing your own is fun and easy to do! Similar to the Christmas cactus your boyfriend’s Mom gave you over the holidays, this green plant is semi-drought friendly. Feel free to take a week long vacay and not worry about returning home to a shriveled up plant.

Planting Process.

Step One. Purchase a large, sturdy clay pot. Fill it to the brim with potting mix and top off with gravel. With a touch of water blend the potting mix and gravel together!

Step Two. Remove the succulents from their home and cluster them together in the pot according to their sizes and shapes.

Step Three. Sprinkle colored aquarium gravel around each plant until the soil mixture is covered.

Watering.

This is the part that I have the most trouble with when it comes to any plants! Succulents and Sunshine breaks this step down perfectly and I strongly suggest heading over their website to read up on How to Water Succulent Plants.

Happy Planting!
